WhatsApp Introduces Voice Chat Feature with Meta AI

WhatsApp is set to enhance its platform with a new voice chat feature powered by Meta AI, enabling users to engage in real-time, hands-free conversations with the AI assistant. This update, aimed at improving accessibility and convenience, is currently being tested by select iOS beta users through version 25.21.10.76 on TestFlight, with a broader release expected soon, according to WABetaInfo.

To start a voice session, users can tap a waveform icon in the Chats tab or, for some beta testers, directly from the Calls tab, simplifying access. An optional setting allows the voice chat to activate automatically upon opening the Meta AI interface, though this is disabled by default to prioritize user control. The feature also supports attaching images from the gallery or camera to provide visual context and offers pre-written prompts to help users initiate conversations.

Designed to feel like a natural phone call, the voice chat remains active even when switching apps, with a “collapse” icon minimizing the chat window while Meta AI continues to listen and respond. This functionality is ideal for multitasking, such as reading notes aloud or browsing the web while receiving AI feedback.

WhatsApp emphasizes user privacy, allowing users to mute the microphone or end the session at any time. On iOS, an orange dot in the status bar signals when the microphone is active, ensuring transparency. This feature is particularly beneficial for users who are driving, multitasking, or find typing challenging.

As Meta continues to integrate AI across its platforms, this marks WhatsApp’s first step toward native, real-time voice interactions with Meta AI, signaling a broader effort to make AI more conversational and seamlessly embedded in everyday communication.
