Two Killed in Ambush on Firefighters in Idaho; Gunman Still at Large

Authorities unsure how many shooters involved as standoff continues

Two people were killed in a shocking ambush on firefighters responding to a blaze in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on Sunday, according to local authorities. The situation remains active, with at least one suspect continuing to fire at public safety personnel.

Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris confirmed the fatalities during a press briefing but said it was not yet clear whether the attack involved a lone gunman or multiple shooters. Civilians may also have been injured, though details are still emerging.

“This is an ongoing and dangerous situation,” Sheriff Norris said. “We are fully prepared to neutralize the suspect who continues to target our emergency responders.”

The incident began shortly after 1:20 p.m. when firefighters were dispatched to a reported fire. Approximately 40 minutes later, reports came in that gunfire had erupted at the scene.

Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack, calling it “a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters.” In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), he urged Idahoans to pray for the victims and their families and advised the public to avoid the area while emergency crews respond.

The Department of Homeland Security has been briefed, according to ABC News.

No further details have been released regarding the identities of the victims or the motive behind the attack.
