June 17 marks five years since the passing of Tariq Aziz, a legendary figure in Pakistan’s cultural and media history. Known for his iconic greeting, “Dekhti aankhon, sun’te kaanon ko Tariq Aziz ka salaam,” he left an indelible mark on generations of Pakistanis through his powerful voice, captivating presence, and multifaceted talents.
Born on April 28, 1936, in Jalandhar, Tariq Aziz began his journey in broadcasting with Radio Pakistan in Lahore. With the launch of Pakistan Television (PTV) in 1964, he etched his name in history as the first male announcer of the national broadcaster. From that point on, his life became inseparably linked with PTV, where he remained a household name for decades.
Aziz’s most celebrated role was as the host of Neelam Ghar, a groundbreaking quiz show that ran for nearly four decades. The program not only entertained but educated and inspired viewers across the country, making him a trusted and beloved figure in every Pakistani home.
Beyond television, Tariq Aziz also made his mark in cinema. His debut film Insaniyat hit the screens in 1967, followed by notable performances in films such as Salgirah, Qasam Us Waqt Ki, Katari, Charagh Kahan Roshni Kahan, and Haar Gaya Insaan. A man of many talents, he was also a gifted poet, writing in both Urdu and Punjabi.
In recognition of his immense contribution to the arts and media, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Pride of Performance in 1992. His passion for public service extended into politics as well, where he served as a Member of the National Assembly from 1997 to 1999.
