Rawal Dam Spillways Opened as Water Levels Surge Near Danger Mark

In response to heavy rainfall in Islamabad, authorities have opened the spillways of Rawal Dam after water levels surged dangerously close to the reservoir’s maximum capacity.

According to officials, the water level in the dam has reached 1,748.40 feet—just shy of the maximum safe limit of 1,752 feet. In an effort to manage the situation and prevent potential overflow, the spillways will remain open for approximately five hours. The ideal operational level is maintained at around 1,746 feet.

Residents living in low-lying areas near the dam have been issued safety advisories, urging them to remain cautious as excess water is discharged.

Elsewhere, low-level flooding has been reported at key points along the Indus River, including Chashma, Tarbela, and Taunsa barrages. However, river flows at other major headworks remain within normal limits for now.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as more rainfall is forecasted in parts of the country, raising concerns about potential flash floods and waterlogging in vulnerable zones.
