New Zealand’s Ish Sodhi Embracing Powerplay Pressure in T20 Cricket

Veteran leg-spinner Ish Sodhi is thriving under the pressure of bowling during the powerplay overs in T20 Internationals, a role he now relishes as part of New Zealand’s bowling strategy. Sodhi made headlines on Thursday with a career-best performance of 4 for 12 against Zimbabwe in the ongoing tri-nation series in Harare, which also features South Africa.

With this remarkable spell, the 32-year-old spinner became only the second New Zealander to reach the milestone of 150 T20I wickets, joining pace bowler Tim Southee (164 wickets) in the elite club. His efforts helped New Zealand secure their fourth consecutive win in the tournament, ensuring a spot in the final against South Africa on Saturday.

Sodhi’s New Role Brings New Opportunities

Speaking after the match, Sodhi expressed his enjoyment in taking on the challenge of bowling early in the innings. Traditionally more active in the middle overs, the leg-spinner has adapted well to the new role, using his variations and control to great effect against aggressive top-order batters.

“Bowling in the powerplay requires you to be sharp and strategic. It’s a challenge, but I’m enjoying every bit of it,” Sodhi said.

Test Squad Update: Bracewell Replaces Injured Phillips

Following the T20 tri-series, New Zealand will remain in Zimbabwe for a two-Test series. However, the squad has seen a late change as Glenn Phillips has been ruled out due to a groin injury sustained during the Major League Cricket competition in the USA.

All-rounder Michael Bracewell has been called up as his replacement for the first Test in Bulawayo. According to New Zealand coach Rob Walter, Bracewell’s inclusion maintains the team’s balance.

“Michael brings valuable experience and fits in well as a like-for-like replacement for Glenn. Since he’s already with the T20 squad and available for the Test, it made sense to bring him in,” said Walter.

Looking Ahead

With the tri-series final looming and a Test series on the horizon, New Zealand’s tour of Zimbabwe is shaping up to be a mix of short-format dominance and red-ball preparation. Sodhi’s resurgence, along with strong team form, puts the Black Caps in a commanding position as they head into the next phase of the tour.
