Jordan Henderson Departs Ajax After Early Contract Termination

By Paul Battison | BBC Sport

Jordan Henderson has officially parted ways with Ajax after reaching a mutual agreement with the club to end his contract a year ahead of schedule.

The former England and Liverpool captain joined the Dutch side in January 2024 on a deal that was set to run until June 2026. However, both parties have now agreed to terminate the contract early, allowing the 35-year-old midfielder to explore new opportunities. He is reportedly attracting interest from clubs in both England and across Europe.

Henderson made 57 appearances for Ajax, often captaining the side, and played a key role during a competitive Eredivisie campaign in which the club narrowly missed out on the title to PSV Eindhoven.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Henderson said:

“I would like to express my immense gratitude to everyone associated with Ajax. To play for this club was an honour in itself. To have the privilege of captaining it was even more so. My only regret is that we didn’t deliver more success for the amazing supporters.”

The midfielder also acknowledged the recent tragic passing of his former teammate Diogo Jota and Jota’s brother, Andre Silva, in a car accident—an event that has deeply affected him.

“Due to the tragic events of last week, and the devastating loss of my former team-mate Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, it doesn’t feel right at this moment to say or do more than share this brief statement,” Henderson added.

“I am fully aware that I owe Ajax, my teammates, and the supporters a fuller and more personal thank you. I will, of course, do that when the time feels more appropriate.”

Henderson previously enjoyed a highly successful 12-year spell at Liverpool, where he won multiple major honours, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and Club World Cup.

After leaving Anfield, he briefly joined Saudi side Al-Ettifaq on a three-year deal, but his stay in the Saudi Pro League lasted less than six months. He then moved to Ajax, where he continued to contribute at the highest level in European football.
