Hamas Says U.S. Ceasefire Proposal Means ‘Continuation of Killing’ in Gaza

The Palestinian group Hamas has sharply criticized a recent U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal, claiming it would perpetuate violence rather than bring an end to the devastating conflict in Gaza. The statement comes amid renewed international efforts to halt fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas, which has ravaged the Gaza Strip for months.

Ceasefire Proposal Rejected as Inadequate

In a statement released on Thursday, Hamas described the proposal presented by U.S. officials as a “trap” that fails to ensure a full withdrawal of Israeli troops or provide adequate guarantees for the protection of Palestinian civilians. The group said the plan does not amount to a true ceasefire but instead allows Israel to maintain its military operations under the guise of a temporary truce.

“The proposal, as it stands, legitimizes the continued presence of occupation forces and gives cover for more killing and displacement of our people,” said a senior Hamas spokesperson. “This is not a path to peace—it is a continuation of the war by other means.”

U.S. and Israeli Officials Advocate for Staged Approach

The ceasefire plan, reportedly backed by Egypt and Qatar as well, outlines a phased approach aimed at ending hostilities and securing the release of hostages held by Hamas. In the initial stage, there would be a temporary pause in fighting, the release of some hostages, and increased humanitarian access to Gaza. A second phase would involve broader negotiations for a lasting truce and reconstruction efforts.

Washington has defended the plan as a pragmatic way to de-escalate tensions and create space for diplomacy. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the proposal includes “concrete steps” to alleviate suffering in Gaza while working toward a longer-term political solution.

Mounting Civilian Toll

The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, over 35,000 people—many of them women and children—have been killed since the conflict escalated in late 2024. Israeli officials say the ongoing military campaign is necessary to dismantle Hamas’s infrastructure and ensure long-term security.

However, human rights organizations have increasingly raised alarms over the scale of destruction, displacement, and civilian casualties. The United Nations has warned of a “complete collapse” of public services in Gaza, with hospitals overwhelmed and access to clean water and food severely limited.

Diplomatic Stalemate

Despite international pressure, the prospect of a negotiated settlement remains elusive. While Israel has signaled openness to a short-term truce, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly vowed to continue operations until Hamas is fully disarmed and no longer governs Gaza.

Hamas, in turn, insists on a full Israeli withdrawal, a permanent ceasefire, and the lifting of the blockade that has stifled Gaza’s economy for years.

Growing Calls for International Action

The impasse has led to growing frustration among regional powers and the broader international community. Protests have erupted in several countries calling for an immediate end to hostilities, and some nations are pushing for more assertive action at the United Nations Security Council.

As diplomatic efforts stall, the people of Gaza remain trapped in a worsening humanitarian nightmare. For many, the rejection of the U.S. proposal by Hamas reflects deep skepticism that international actors are willing—or able—to broker a just and lasting peace.
