Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Saturday called on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to initiate meaningful reforms from within its own ranks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), where the party holds a majority. Speaking at a press conference at the Mufti Mehmood Centre in Peshawar, Rehman emphasized that any political transformation in the province must emerge internally from the ruling party.
Highlighting the broader challenges across Pakistan, he stated, “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is gripped by lawlessness, Sindh is plagued by criminal networks, and Balochistan is under the shadow of terrorism. Meanwhile, those in power appear to be extorting armed groups rather than asserting the rule of law.”
Rehman criticized the state’s inability to establish authority, suggesting that public trust in the system is dwindling. “While political disagreements exist, we harbor no enmity toward other parties,” he said, stressing the need for collective responsibility and dialogue.
The JUI-F chief once again condemned the merger of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with KP, calling it a miscalculated move made without proper parliamentary debate. He urged those behind the decision to accept responsibility for what he views as a lack of foresight.
Commenting on the upcoming Senate elections, Rehman refrained from confirming any political alliances. “It is premature to speak of any adjustments,” he said, noting that decisions would be taken after deliberation with tribal jirgas. A grand jirga of FATA tribal leaders is scheduled for the following day to determine the way forward.
He also expressed skepticism over the federal government’s intentions toward FATA. “Is the government genuinely regretful, or is it simply eyeing the region’s natural wealth?” he questioned. Rehman distanced himself from the current administration, stating, “Had I been satisfied with the government’s conduct, I would have joined it. But I refuse to support assemblies formed through manipulation and corruption.”
Rehman asserted that JUI-F remains committed to democratic principles and the will of the people. “We will not seek power through backdoor arrangements. If we lead a government, it will be free of corruption and extortion,” he pledged.
Addressing PTI’s ongoing political activities, he urged the party to focus on national interests rather than personal agendas. “Movements should be about the country’s future, not just about securing the release of any one individual,” he concluded.
