MORRISTOWN, NEW JERSEY — President Donald Trump brushed off Elon Musk’s announcement of a new political party, calling the idea “ridiculous” and insisting that the U.S. political system is built to function with just two major parties.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday before boarding Air Force One, Trump addressed Musk’s creation of the “America Party,” which the billionaire launched a day earlier amid a growing feud between the two high-profile figures.
“I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party,” Trump said, flanked by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick. “We’ve had tremendous success with the Republican Party. The Democrats are lost, but this country was clearly built around a two-party system. Third parties have never worked. He can have fun with it, but it’s just confusion.”
Musk announced the formation of the America Party on Saturday, citing strong opposition to Trump’s recently passed tax cut and spending bill, which he warned would push the country toward bankruptcy.
In response to Musk’s political move, investment firm Azoria Partners announced a delay in launching a fund linked to Tesla, citing concerns over Musk’s expanding political focus and potential conflict with his role as Tesla CEO.
Musk, who previously served as a senior adviser during Trump’s first term on government efficiency reforms, now says his new party will challenge sitting Republican members of Congress in next year’s midterm elections—particularly those who supported the president’s controversial “big, beautiful bill.”
While Musk’s push adds an unpredictable twist to the upcoming elections, Trump remains confident in the resilience of the two-party tradition. “This country has always worked with two strong sides,” he said. “No need to change that now.”
