Spain Secures Euro 2025 Final Spot with Bonmatí’s Extra-Time Heroics

In a gripping Women’s Euro 2025 semi-final in Zurich on July 23, 2025, world champions Spain clinched a 1-0 victory over Germany, thanks to a late extra-time goal by Aitana Bonmatí. The triumph sets up a blockbuster final against defending champions England in Basel on Sunday, echoing their 2023 World Cup clash where Spain also prevailed 1-0.

The match, attended by 22,432 fans at Letzigrund Stadium, seemed destined for penalties until Bonmatí, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner, struck in the 113th minute. Exploiting a gap at German goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger’s near post, she fired a precise shot from a tight angle after a pass from Athenea del Castillo. “I saw the near post open and didn’t hesitate—I didn’t want penalties,” Bonmatí said post-match.

Spain’s historic win marked their first-ever victory over Germany and secured their maiden Euro final appearance. Bonmatí, despite a quieter game by her standards, emphasized the milestone: “We’ve made history, beating Germany and reaching our first Euro final. But we’re not done yet—England is next.”

Goalkeeper Cata Coll was pivotal, thwarting Germany with a stunning double save in stoppage time, denying Klara Bühl’s deflected shot and Carlotta Wamser’s follow-up. Coll’s heroics continued in extra time, stopping a late effort from Lea Schüller to preserve Spain’s lead. Germany, missing key players due to suspensions and injuries, leaned heavily on Berger, who made crucial saves, including one against Esther González, but couldn’t prevent Bonmatí’s decisive strike.

Germany’s coach Christian Wueck defended Berger, saying, “She made incredible saves to keep us in the game. There’s no blame—we’re proud of the team.” Despite the home crowd’s support, Germany fell short of a ninth Euro title and a chance to avenge their 2022 final loss to England.

Spain, coached by Montse Tomé, now aims to become the first team since Germany in 2010 to hold both World Cup and Euro titles simultaneously. With momentum from their quarter-final win over Switzerland and standout performances from Coll and Bonmatí, Spain is poised to challenge England for continental glory.
