Remembering Tariq Aziz: The Iconic Voice of PTV Five Years On

Dekhti aankhon, suntay kaanon ko Tariq Aziz ka salaam” — these unforgettable words still echo in the hearts of millions as Pakistan marks the fifth death anniversary of Tariq Aziz, the legendary broadcaster whose voice became synonymous with the golden era of Pakistan Television (PTV).

Born on April 28, 1936, in Jalandhar, Tariq Aziz began his journey in broadcasting with Radio Pakistan Lahore. He would later etch his name in history as the first male announcer when Pakistan Television launched in 1964. From that inaugural broadcast to the final moments of his career, his association with PTV remained unbroken.

Aziz’s name became a household staple through Neelam Ghar, a quiz show that captivated viewers for over four decades. His charismatic presence and eloquent style made the program a cultural touchstone for generations.

Beyond television, Tariq Aziz left his mark on the silver screen with roles in several Pakistani films, including Insaniyat (1967), Salgirah, Qasam Us Waqt Ki, Katari, Charagh Kahan Roshni Kahan, and Haar Gaya Insaan. He was also a poet who wrote with depth and emotion in both Urdu and Punjabi.

In recognition of his contributions to arts and media, the Government of Pakistan awarded him the Pride of Performance in 1992. His public service continued when he served as a Member of the National Assembly from 1997 to 1999.

The resonant voice that once filled living rooms across the nation fell silent on June 17, 2020. But even five years later, the memory of Tariq Aziz endures — a symbol of grace, intellect, and dedication in Pakistan’s media history.
