PM Shehbaz Sharif Condemns Indian Aggression, Vows Continued National Resilience

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif revealed on Saturday that 55 Pakistani citizens were martyred during a wave of Indian aggression in May, reaffirming Pakistan’s right to self-defence and the resilience of its armed forces.

Speaking to participants of the “Uraan Summer Scholars Programme” in Islamabad, the prime minister said Pakistan responded decisively and effectively to India’s assault. “Our nuclear capability is solely for deterrence, not for confrontation. There is no threat of nuclear war, and with God’s mercy, there never will be,” he assured.

The premier highlighted Pakistan’s successful conventional response using modern warfare techniques and advanced technology. “Our military showcased remarkable courage and professionalism. The nation stood shoulder to shoulder with its defenders, leading to victory,” he said.

Referring specifically to an attack on the night of May 9–10, Shehbaz claimed that Indian forces once again violated Pakistan’s sovereignty. “In retaliation, Pakistan downed six Indian fighter jets, sending a clear message that our defence is uncompromising,” he stated.

Condemning the loss of innocent lives, Shehbaz said, “India’s actions in May were unjustified. Instead of accepting calls for an impartial investigation into the Pahalgam incident, India chose hostility. Pakistan had no involvement in that tragedy.”

On the domestic front, the prime minister touched on governance and reform, particularly within the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). “We appointed a consultancy firm to spearhead FBR reforms. Due to my past performance in Punjab, there was minimal pressure for appointments. Officers from grades 20 to 22 were removed based on intelligence inputs,” he explained.

He added that structural reforms in the FBR had led to significant progress: “We rooted out corruption, ended political favouritism, and embraced digitalisation. The reform agenda is now moving forward at a steady pace.”

Turning to economic matters, Shehbaz cited recent improvements following a reduction in the policy interest rate to 11%. “This will encourage people to invest in the economy rather than keep their funds in banks. Key economic indicators are improving due to coordinated efforts,” he said.

Reflecting on last year’s economic turmoil, Shehbaz admitted the situation was dire in 2023. “Most feared Pakistan was heading toward default. We stepped in during extremely difficult circumstances and made hard choices, but we never gave up,” he said.

Praising the youth involved in the scholars programme, the prime minister stressed the importance of practical experience. “This initiative includes participants from every part of Pakistan. You are our future. Your energy and insights will help shape the next chapter of our governance,” he said, expressing confidence in the new generation’s potential to contribute meaningfully to national development.
