This category, overseen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), is dedicated to feature-length films produced outside the United States, with at least 50% of dialogue in a language other than English. Eligible entries can also include documentary and animated films, provided they meet the Academy’s standards.
The selection process is managed by a committee comprising a diverse group of industry professionals—including directors, producers, artists, and technical experts. Members are chosen through a private nomination and referral process, and all candidates are reviewed by the International Feature Film Executive Committee for final approval.
Once films are submitted, each committee member is required to watch every eligible entry and cast votes individually. - Films that premiere on non-theatrical platforms (like TV, streaming services, or airline entertainment) prior to a cinema release will be considered ineligible.
- Films must feature primarily non-English dialogue with clear English subtitles.
