On Saturday, President Asif Ali Zardari conferred the prestigious Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) on General Michael E. Kurilla, Commander of the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), during a distinguished ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad. The award recognizes General Kurilla’s outstanding military leadership and his instrumental role in fortifying defense relations between Pakistan and the United States, particularly in counterterrorism and regional stability efforts.
The Pakistani military’s media wing highlighted Kurilla’s contributions to fostering mutual understanding and deepening strategic cooperation. The ceremony, marked by a Tri-Services Guard of Honour, reflected the high regard in which Pakistan holds the USCENTCOM commander.
During his visit, General Kurilla engaged in high-level discussions with President Zardari and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir. The talks centered on regional security challenges, transnational threats, and opportunities for enhanced military collaboration, including joint training initiatives. The rare honor bestowed upon Kurilla underscores Pakistan’s appreciation for his steadfast commitment to bilateral defense ties.
Regional Defense Conference Strengthens Multilateral Ties
General Kurilla’s visit coincided with the Central & South Asia Chiefs of Defence Conference, hosted by Pakistan in Islamabad. The two-day event, themed “Strengthening Bonds, Securing Peace,” brought together defense leaders from the United States, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan to discuss critical security issues.
Field Marshal Munir, addressing the delegates, emphasized the need for closer cooperation in an era of complex hybrid threats. “Transnational challenges demand unified action and trust-building,” he said, according to a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The conference facilitated robust discussions on cyber resilience, counter-extremism, interoperability, and joint military exercises, culminating in a shared pledge to bolster regional peace and security.
Pakistan’s role as host was widely praised, with attendees commending its hospitality and leadership in fostering a collaborative vision for Central and South Asian security. The conference and Kurilla’s award highlight Pakistan’s growing influence in regional defense diplomacy, signaling a commitment to stronger multilateral partnerships and a stable, secure future.
