A Mumbai court has issued a legal notice to Bollywood actor Rhea Chakraborty, requesting her formal reply to the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) closure report in connection with the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
The CBI had submitted its closure report in March to a magistrate court in Bandra, wrapping up its inquiry into the high-profile case that began nearly five years ago. The case was subsequently shifted to the Esplanade court in South Mumbai, which handles matters related to the CBI.
Presiding over the case, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate R.D. Chavan recently served the notice to Chakraborty, who is recognized as the original complainant in a counter-complaint. She had previously filed a case accusing Rajput’s sisters and a doctor of contributing to his death.
The next hearing is scheduled for August 12, when the court is expected to evaluate whether to accept the CBI’s closure report or direct further investigation.
As part of its probe, the CBI recorded statements from several individuals, including Chakraborty—who was reportedly in a relationship with Rajput—as well as close associates. The agency also reviewed the late actor’s medical history and other key evidence.
Sushant Singh Rajput, originally from Bihar, was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14, 2020. Initially, the Bihar Police began investigating the case after Rajput’s father, K.K. Singh, filed an FIR accusing Chakraborty of abetting his son’s suicide. The CBI later took over the investigation from Bihar authorities.
The court’s upcoming decision will determine the next phase in a case that captured national attention and sparked widespread public and media interest.
