Karachi Records First Dengue Fatality of 2025 Amid Rising Cases

The first dengue-related death of 2025 has been reported in Karachi, as a 48-year-old woman from the city’s East district succumbed to complications from the mosquito-borne virus, Sindh health officials confirmed on Saturday.

According to the Sindh Health Department, the woman was admitted to Aga Khan University Hospital on July 23 after presenting symptoms consistent with dengue fever. Lab tests later confirmed she was infected with the virus.

Health authorities revealed that the patient had pre-existing medical conditions, including diabetes and a urinary tract infection (UTI), which likely worsened her condition. She passed away on Thursday, becoming Sindh’s first dengue fatality this year.

As of now, 345 dengue cases have been reported across Sindh, with Karachi accounting for the bulk of the infections.

In response to the growing concern, the health department has issued public health advisories urging residents to:

  • Avoid accumulation of stagnant water
  • Use mosquito repellents and nets
  • Ensure frequent fumigation in homes and neighborhoods

Dengue cases in Pakistan typically surge during the monsoon season, and health experts warn that continued rainfall and poor sanitation can rapidly escalate the outbreak, putting added pressure on hospitals and clinics.

Authorities are urging citizens to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to prevent mosquito breeding, especially in urban areas like Karachi where the virus tends to spread rapidly.
