Karachi Heatwave May Ease Slightly with Light Drizzle Expected Tonight

KARACHI: Residents of Karachi may find slight relief from the ongoing heatwave as light rain or drizzle is forecast for parts of the city tonight and into Thursday morning. Weather experts say this shift is due to the influence of marine cloud cover currently affecting the region.

A weather analyst noted that the sea breeze is continuing as normal, with wind speeds ranging from 25 to 35 kilometers per hour. Skies are expected to remain partly cloudy throughout the day, offering some respite from direct sunlight.

Despite daytime temperatures ranging between 34°C and 36°C, high humidity is making conditions feel significantly hotter — as intense as 40°C to 43°C, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD has also issued a broader forecast indicating that hot and dry conditions will persist across most lowland regions of the country during the Eid ul Adha holidays.

Moist air currents are making their way into the northeastern regions, while a westerly weather system is anticipated to reach northern Pakistan by June 3. This combination is expected to bring unsettled weather, including duststorms, thunderstorms, and localized heavy rain or hail from June 2 to June 5 in several areas.

Regions expected to be affected include Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Mansehra, Battagram, Shangla, Kohistan, and Abbottabad.

Thunderstorms and scattered rainfall are also predicted during Eid in areas such as Dir, Swat, Chitral, Kohistan, and Mansehra.

The Met Office has warned of potential damage due to windstorms, hail, and lightning — particularly to vulnerable structures such as power lines, trees, vehicles, and solar panels in northern and central Pakistan.

Farmers have been advised to plan agricultural activities accordingly, and the general public, including commuters and tourists, are urged to take necessary precautions during this period of volatile weather.
