LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a thrilling rematch of last year’s World Series, reigning MVPs Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani delivered a historic power display Friday night, each launching a home run in the first inning of a star-studded showdown between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Judge struck first, crushing a 446-foot solo homer to straightaway center field on a 1-1 pitch from Dodgers starter Tony Gonsolin. The blast marked his 19th home run of the season, tying him for third in the majors alongside Kyle Schwarber.
Not to be outdone, Ohtani responded in the bottom half of the inning with a towering 417-foot shot to center on the first pitch he saw from Yankees left-hander Max Fried. The sellout crowd of 53,276 at Dodger Stadium erupted as the Japanese superstar rounded the bases.
“I felt like he was copying me,” Judge joked with a grin after the game.
The two blasts marked a historic milestone: it was the first time in Major League Baseball history that both reigning MVPs homered in the first inning of the same game. The only previous instance of reigning MVPs going deep in the same game—including postseason—came on June 30, 2002, when Barry Bonds of the Giants and Miguel Tejada of the Athletics both homered.
With two of baseball’s biggest stars lighting up the scoreboard early, the marquee matchup between the Yankees and Dodgers lived up to the hype from the very first pitch.
