Jordan Henderson Departs Ajax After Contract Terminated Early

Jordan Henderson has officially left Ajax after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract a year ahead of schedule.

The 35-year-old England midfielder joined the Dutch club in January 2024 on a deal that was due to run until June 2026. However, the agreement has now been ended early, making Henderson a free agent and open to new opportunities across Europe, including a possible return to England.

Henderson made over 50 appearances for Ajax and was given the captain’s armband during his brief tenure. He helped guide the team through a competitive Eredivisie campaign that saw them narrowly miss out on the title, with PSV Eindhoven sealing the championship on the final day.

“It was an honour to play for this club, and an even greater honour to captain it,” said Henderson in a statement. “My only regret is that we couldn’t bring more success to the incredible Ajax supporters.”

The former Liverpool captain also acknowledged the recent tragedy involving his former teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident last week, along with his brother Andre Silva. Henderson, who recently returned to Merseyside to mourn the loss, limited his farewell message out of respect.

“Given the devastating events of the past week, this doesn’t feel like the right moment for a full goodbye,” he said. “I do owe Ajax—my teammates, the fans, and everyone involved—a more personal thank you, and I will offer that when the time is right.”

Henderson joined Ajax after a short stint at Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, where he had signed a three-year deal. His time in the Saudi Pro League lasted less than six months before his move to the Netherlands.

During his illustrious 12-year spell at Liverpool, Henderson won numerous honours, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups, and the Community Shield.
