Hope Restored: Camel Walks Again with Prosthetic Limb a Year After Brutal Attack in Sindh

One year after a horrifying act of cruelty left her maimed, a young camel named Cammie has taken her first steps on a prosthetic limb—marking a powerful moment of healing, resilience, and compassion in Karachi.

Cammie, who lost her front leg when a landlord in Sindh’s Sanghar district hacked it off for wandering into his field, has been under the care of the CDRS Benji Project for Animal Welfare. After months of rehabilitation, she is now able to walk again, thanks to a custom-designed prosthetic provided by U.S.-based Bionic Pets.

The emotional milestone was met with joy and relief at the Karachi animal shelter where she had been recovering. “Seeing Cammie walk again is beyond words. I’m ecstatic,” said Sarah Jahangir, Director of the CDRS Benji Project. “This was a team effort, and I’m so proud of everyone involved.”

Jahangir acknowledged the vital support from Senator Qurat-Ul-Ain Marri and her sister, Member of National Assembly Shazia Marri, for their advocacy and unwavering backing throughout Cammie’s journey. “Their intervention saved Cammie’s life and allowed us to give her a second chance,” she noted.

Cammie’s ordeal began when she wandered into a private field searching for food. In a fit of rage, the landlord used a sharp weapon to sever her leg. The barbaric act shocked the nation, triggering widespread outrage on social media and prompting legal action. Authorities arrested five individuals in a rare enforcement of Pakistan’s animal welfare laws.

Her recovery process was long and complex. The prosthetic limb, which arrived in Pakistan two months ago, could only be fitted after her physical wounds healed and her emotional state stabilized. Caretakers carefully monitored her progress before introducing the limb, ensuring she was both physically and psychologically ready.

Now, with her prosthetic leg in place, Cammie is slowly regaining mobility and confidence—a symbol of survival and compassion in a society where animal cruelty often goes unpunished.

“This is more than a medical achievement,” Jahangir said. “It’s a statement that every life matters and that justice, no matter how delayed, can still lead to healing.”

As Cammie continues her journey toward full recovery, her story has become a beacon of hope and a reminder of the urgent need for stronger protections for animals across Pakistan.
