Dozens Killed in Chaos Near Gaza Aid Hub: Mounting Casualties and Escalating Controversy

Humanitarian Catastrophe Unfolds at Gaza Aid Distribution Site

On Sunday, dozens of Palestinians were killed and hundreds injured near an aid distribution point in southern Gaza, according to Palestinian health authorities and eyewitnesses. The deadly incident unfolded at the “Al-Alam” roundabout near a site operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)—a controversial, U.S.-backed organization responsible for distributing aid in the war-torn enclave.

Palestinian officials reported 31 fatalities with over 200 additional casualties, many suffering severe injuries. Most of the deceased were shot in the head or chest, hospital sources confirmed. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its field hospital received 179 casualties, including women and children, making it the single deadliest incident since the facility was established.

Conflicting Accounts: Who Is Responsible?

While Palestinian authorities squarely blame Israeli forces for the bloodshed, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) denied firing at civilians within or near the aid hub. A senior Israeli military source admitted that Israeli troops had fired warning shots at individuals about a kilometer away from the aid site—hours before the site opened—but insisted the IDF was not responsible for any casualties at the distribution point.

Despite Israel’s denials, eyewitnesses reported that gunfire erupted as civilians approached the hub, creating widespread panic. Survivors described scenes of horror—people being trampled amid chaos, with gunfire whizzing overhead. According to local paramedics, victims began flooding into hospitals shortly after the incident began.

Aid Distribution Turns Deadly: “A Death Trap”

Many Palestinians had walked for hours—some through the night—to reach the GHF site in Rafah, hoping to secure food for their families. Instead, what they encountered was described by witnesses as a “death trap.”

One survivor, Ghassan Eid Al-Aghan, shared, “We couldn’t even reach the aid point. The situation was terrifying—heavy gunfire everywhere. I can’t risk my life again just to get a bag of flour.”

Others echoed similar sentiments. Mohammad Qdeih told reporters: “They’re sniping everyone—women, children, innocent civilians.” According to Qdeih, the gates were expected to open at 5:30 a.m., but before any distribution began, intense shooting broke out, scattering the crowd and causing fatal injuries.

Surveillance Footage and Denials from GHF

In response to the mounting accusations, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation released surveillance footage showing hundreds of civilians approaching the aid site at dawn. The four-minute video, silent and inconclusive, showed no injuries or gunfire within the distribution point, though bursts of tracer fire were visible nearby.

GHF officials claimed that “no gunfire occurred in or around the center” and accused Hamas of spreading false narratives. The foundation insists that the aid distribution on Sunday was “completed without incident,” a claim widely disputed by witnesses and medics on the ground.

Red Cross and Medical Professionals Sound the Alarm

The Red Cross described the event as the worst in over a year, with “scores of gunshot and shrapnel wounds, including head and thoracic injuries.” Dr. Ahmed Abu Sweid, a field medic from Australia working at Nasser Hospital, confirmed the grim reality: “All victims had clearly been hit by live fire. This was not a stampede. These were direct hits.”

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) was the only medical presence at the site when the chaos began. Paramedics said the sheer number of casualties overwhelmed available resources, as ambulances made back-to-back trips to area hospitals.

Mounting International Criticism Over GHF’s Role

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, established as an alternative aid channel to bypass Hamas, has faced increasing scrutiny from UN agencies and humanitarian organizations. Critics argue that the GHF’s model lacks transparency and fails to protect civilians, particularly due to the absence of screening procedures or orderly distribution protocols.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) director Philippe Lazzarini wrote on social media: “Aid distribution has become a death trap. Mass casualties today were caused by gunfire targeting desperate, starving civilians.”

The GHF’s design was meant to reduce aid theft, but critics say its approach has created chaos and placed civilians in even greater danger. Unlike UN agencies, GHF does not check identification or follow a registry-based distribution system, creating mad scrambles for limited supplies that frequently erupt into violence.

A Pattern of Fatal Aid Incidents in Gaza

This is not the first time aid distribution in Gaza has ended in death. Since the GHF began operations, more than 11 people had already been killed and dozens wounded in earlier distribution efforts. Each incident reflects the deepening desperation among Palestinians facing near-total siege conditions in Gaza.

One unnamed survivor said, “GHF just puts down four or five wooden pallets and opens the gates. People rush in, fight, trample each other—and if they don’t die that way, they get shot.”

The famine in Gaza is worsening, according to the World Food Programme (WFP), and tensions are rising. On Saturday, nearly 80 aid trucks were ransacked amid growing chaos and lawlessness across the enclave.

Desperation and Displacement: Stories from the Ground

For many Gazans, the journey to obtain aid is long, exhausting, and increasingly futile. Abdul Majid Al-Zayti walked seven hours to reach the distribution site, only to leave empty-handed. “I’m an old man. I have hungry children. No one wants to help us. We’re just trying to survive.”

Others who made the trek reported that distribution did not even begin, or that aid was so limited it sparked violent competition. Basel Abu Alwan said: “A drone told us to return at 6 a.m. But when people moved forward, gunfire was sprayed randomly. Whoever grabbed a bag of food survived. Whoever didn’t, maybe died.”

The GHF Responds: Promises to Expand Despite Criticism

Despite the tragedy, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation pledged to expand its presence, stating that it has provided over 4.7 million meals in six days, and that 16 trucks carrying 887,000 meals were delivered on Sunday alone. Interim Executive Director John Acree acknowledged the gap between aid provided and overwhelming need, saying GHF is operating under “immense constraints” and remains “the only organization able to deliver food securely.”

But critics argue that security without structure is meaningless. As chaos mounts and casualties rise, pressure is building for GHF to reform its operations—or step aside entirely in favor of more experienced, neutral humanitarian organizations.

Conclusion: Desperate Civilians Caught Between Politics and Hunger

The tragic events of Sunday at the Gaza aid hub highlight the catastrophic failure of current humanitarian aid mechanisms in Gaza. With Israel and GHF denying responsibility and Palestinian medics presenting starkly different evidence, the truth may remain elusive. But what is clear is that desperate civilians are paying the highest price, caught between blockade, bureaucratic dysfunction, and unrelenting violence.

The international community faces a moral reckoning—will it intervene to ensure aid is delivered safely and effectively, or will more tragedies continue to unfold in the shadow of inaction?
