Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, opting instead to remain at Old Trafford despite the prospect of a substantial salary increase.

The Portuguese midfielder had spent several days weighing up the proposal, which reportedly would have more than doubled his current wages. However, after consulting with his family, Fernandes has decided against making the switch to the Saudi Pro League.

His decision is expected to be addressed during a press conference in Germany later today, ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League semi-final on Wednesday.

United Relieved, Al-Hilal Left Waiting

Manchester United are said to be “delighted” by Fernandes’ commitment to the club. Head coach Ruben Amorim had recently expressed confidence that the 30-year-old would remain in Manchester, and Fernandes’ choice has reinforced that belief.

Crucially, there were no formal talks between United and Al-Hilal. As a result, the Premier League club was never formally presented with an offer to consider — though Al-Hilal were reportedly ready to pay between £80 million and £100 million to land Fernandes in time for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.

It remains unclear whether the Saudi champions will now shift their focus to alternative transfer targets.

A Show of Loyalty

Since joining United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020 for £47 million, Fernandes has made 290 appearances and scored 98 goals. He has consistently been one of the club’s top performers and currently serves as team captain.

Former United defender Gary Neville praised Fernandes’ decision, telling Sky Sports:
“He’s so important. The fact that he wants to stay and go through this — to turn that kind of money down when the club is at its lowest ebb — that says everything about him as a person.”

Neville added that Fernandes’ loyalty will further endear him to fans, especially at a time when the club is struggling both on and off the pitch:
“The club needs players who will run through a brick wall for them. Fernandes saying, ‘I want to fight, I want to come out the other side and achieve something here’ — it’s massive.”
