Renowned Palestinian filmmaker Annemarie Jacir is set to debut her latest cinematic work, Palestine 36, at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it will be featured as a prestigious Gala Screening. The film marks Jacir’s powerful return to narrative cinema and promises to deliver an emotionally resonant exploration of memory, identity, and resistance within the Palestinian experience.
Backing the project from its earliest stages, Katara Studios has played a central role in bringing Palestine 36 to life. The Qatari production house has not only financed the film but also commissioned its atmospheric original score, performed by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, adding depth and cultural texture to the story.
The cast unites a diverse and internationally acclaimed lineup of talent. Oscar winner Jeremy Irons stars alongside Liam Cunningham of Game of Thrones fame and celebrated Tunisian actor Dhafer L’Abidine. They join an ensemble of acclaimed Palestinian actors including Hiam Abbass, Yasmine Al Massri, Kamel El Basha, and Saleh Bakri, a frequent collaborator of Jacir’s.
Palestine 36 is produced by Ossama Bawardi under the Philistine Films banner and brings together a dynamic international team of co-producers: Cat Villiers (UK), Hani Farsi and Nils Åstrand for Corniche Media (UK), Olivier Barbier for MK Productions (France), Katrin Pors for Snowglobe (Denmark), as well as Azzam Fakhrildin and Hamza Ali.
With Palestine 36, Jacir continues to amplify Palestinian narratives on a global scale, weaving a cinematic experience that reflects both the resilience and complexity of her homeland. Its premiere at TIFF positions the film as one of the most anticipated entries in the international festival circuit this year.
