SBP Announces Eid ul Adha Bank Holidays from June 6 to 9

ISLAMABAD: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has confirmed that it will observe public holidays from June 6 (Friday) to June 9 (Monday) in celebration of Eid ul Adha. During this period, all commercial banks, microfinance institutions, and financial entities across the country will remain closed.

This announcement follows the federal government’s earlier declaration of a four-day holiday for Eid ul Adha, which falls on Saturday, June 7 this year. A notification issued by the Cabinet Division confirmed that both five-day and six-day workweek offices will observe holidays on June 6, 7, 8, and 9.

According to the Islamic lunar calendar, the first day of Zil Hajj will be observed on Thursday, May 29, 2025. Eid ul Adha, which takes place on the 10th day of Zil Hajj, coincides with the peak of the annual Hajj pilgrimage and is one of the most significant Islamic festivals, alongside Eid ul Fitr.

Commonly known as the “Feast of Sacrifice,” Eid ul Adha honors the story of Prophet Ibrahim’s (PBUH) profound act of devotion, where he was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. According to the Qur’an, his son was divinely spared, and a ram was provided in his place.

Traditionally, the festival spans three days of observance, marked by special prayers, sacrificial rituals, and widespread acts of charity. Families across Pakistan gather for meals, distribute sacrificial meat to neighbors and those in need, and partake in communal celebrations.

In preparation for the occasion, livestock markets have been set up in urban and rural areas alike, where citizens are busy purchasing animals—such as goats, cows, sheep, and camels—for the ritual sacrifice.

With the holiday season approaching, financial institutions are urging customers to complete essential banking transactions in advance, as operations will resume after June 9.
