Taylor Swift Reclaims Her Legacy: Now Owns Entire Music Catalog

After a years-long public battle over the rights to her own music, Taylor Swift has officially gained full ownership of her entire catalog, fulfilling what she calls her “decades of dreams.”

In a heartfelt message shared on her website, Swift announced that she now owns all of her music — from her earliest recordings to her most recent hits — including music videos, album art, concert films, and even unreleased material. This milestone marks the end of a tumultuous chapter in her career that began when her original master recordings were sold without her consent in 2019.

A Long-Awaited Victory

Swift acquired her music “outright, with no strings attached” from Shamrock Capital, a private equity firm that had previously purchased the rights from Scooter Braun’s company, Ithaca Holdings. Swift emphasized the integrity of her dealings with Shamrock, calling the transaction fair and respectful.

“To say this is my greatest dream come true is actually being pretty reserved about it,” Swift wrote. “This was a business deal to them, but they really saw it for what it was to me: my memories, my sweat, my handwriting, and my decades of dreams.”

Swift also credited the massive success of her Eras Tour as a factor that helped make this deal possible.

A Fight for Artistic Ownership

The controversy surrounding Swift’s masters began in 2019 when Braun acquired her first six albums in a high-profile deal with Big Machine Records. Swift said she was blindsided by the sale and denied the opportunity to purchase her masters at the time. In response, she made a bold move: re-recording each of those albums under the “Taylor’s Version” brand.

So far, Swift has released re-recorded versions of Fearless, Red, Speak Now, and 1989, each including “vault tracks” — previously unreleased songs. These albums have not only been commercially successful, but they’ve also helped reshape industry conversations about artist rights.

Her version of 1989 debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking her 13th album to achieve that feat. Songs like Is It Over Now?, a vault track from that album, even reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100.

What’s Next?

Fans, often dubbed “Swifties,” are now eagerly awaiting the re-recordings of her 2017 album Reputation and her 2006 debut Taylor Swift. In her announcement, Swift confirmed that Reputation (Taylor’s Version) is still in progress, explaining that she’s struggled to reconnect with the emotions tied to that particular era.

“I haven’t even finished a quarter of it,” she admitted, “because it was so specific to that time in my life.” However, she hinted that vault tracks from the Reputation era may still see the light of day — “if you’re into the idea.”

Swift revealed that her debut album’s re-recording is complete, though she has yet to announce its release date.

A New Industry Standard

Beyond her personal win, Swift acknowledged the broader impact of her fight for ownership. She noted that her journey has inspired other artists to prioritize owning their master recordings, prompting crucial discussions about fairness and creative control in the music industry.

“I am extremely heartened by the conversations this saga has reignited,” Swift wrote. “Every time a new artist tells me they negotiated to own their masters because of this fight, I’m reminded of how important it was for all this to happen.”

A Full-Circle Moment

Now, after more than a decade in the spotlight, Taylor Swift is finally in complete control of her musical identity. Her journey — from a teenage country star to a global pop icon and savvy businesswoman — has not only redefined her career but also helped reshape the landscape for future generations of artists.

With gratitude, she ended her letter by thanking her fans: “Thanks to you and your goodwill, teamwork, and encouragement, the best things that have ever been mine… finally actually are.”
