On Thursday, July 31, 2025, Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) successfully launched a cutting-edge Remote Sensing Satellite from China’s Xichang Satellite Launch Center, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s space endeavors.
This state-of-the-art satellite is poised to revolutionize Pakistan’s Earth observation capabilities. Equipped with sophisticated sensors, it will facilitate a broad range of applications, including precision agriculture, urban development, environmental monitoring, and disaster preparedness. The satellite’s real-time data collection will enhance the monitoring of natural phenomena such as floods, landslides, glacier retreat, earthquakes, and deforestation, providing critical insights for sustainable development.
The launch strengthens Pakistan’s role in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) by supporting infrastructure planning, geohazard risk assessment, and transportation route mapping. It builds on the success of previous missions, including the 2018 launch of PRSS-1 and the January 2025 launch of EO-1, Pakistan’s first fully indigenous satellite, designed to support agriculture, environmental analysis, and disaster management.
Pakistan’s space journey has seen remarkable progress since the 2011 launch of PakSat-1R, a communications satellite developed in collaboration with China. Subsequent milestones include the 2018 launches of PakTES-1A and PRSS-1, which established Pakistan’s Earth observation capabilities, and the 2024 launch of PakSat-MM1, which expanded high-speed internet access to remote areas. Additionally, the 2024 iCube Qamar mission, led by students from the Institute of Space Technology, captured stunning lunar images, highlighting Pakistan’s emerging talent in space exploration.
