In Pakistan, the burden of diabetes is compounded by a rising mental health crisis among patients. With over 33 million individuals diagnosed with diabetes nationwide, recent findings indicate that nearly 30 to 40 percent of them are also battling significant mental stress.
This alarming statistic was shared by Diabetologist Professor Abdul Basit during a media briefing at Indus Hospital. He noted that diabetic individuals are two to three times more likely to experience depression compared to the general population, pointing to the urgent need for integrated mental health care within diabetes treatment frameworks.
Professor Basit also drew attention to the country’s critical shortage of mental health professionals, which further complicates efforts to support patients struggling with psychological distress.
Echoing these concerns, Dr Abdul Bari Khan, President of the Indus Hospital and Health Network, highlighted the institution’s dual role in offering free, quality healthcare services and promoting awareness through research-driven initiatives. He stressed the importance of addressing both physical and mental health needs in managing chronic illnesses like diabetes.
