Owen Farrell has been named among the replacements for the British and Irish Lions’ final warm-up match before their Test series against Australia.

The 33-year-old, currently on his fourth Lions tour, joined the squad last week as injury cover for Elliot Daly. He will be one of two backline options on the bench for Saturday’s clash against the Australia and New Zealand Invitational XV, alongside Marcus Smith.

Scotland’s Ben White gets the nod at scrum-half, with Jac Morgan continuing at open-side flanker. Henry Pollock and Ben Earl round out the back row, while Scotland’s centre duo Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones both start.

Should he feature from the bench, it will be Farrell’s first match in over two months, having suffered a concussion in May’s European Challenge Cup semi-final against Lyon. That match marked the end of a brief and injury-plagued stint with Racing 92, disrupted by a recurring groin issue.

Farrell has since ended his time in France, re-signing with Saracens earlier this summer. If selected for the Test squad to face the Wallabies on 19 July, it would mark a significant return to top-tier rugby, following his break from the international stage after the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Farrell last appeared for England in their third-place play-off victory over Argentina in October. After that, he stepped back from international duties to focus on personal and family priorities, and his move to France made him unavailable for England selection.

“He’s in the same position as the others—getting up to speed quickly,” said head coach Andy Farrell, who is also Owen’s father. “At this stage of the tour, mental sharpness is vital for every player, not just those newly arrived.”

At full-back, Ireland’s Hugo Keenan starts, having only played 50 minutes so far due to injury and illness. With Blair Kinghorn nursing a knock sustained in the win over the Brumbies, Keenan could be making a case for a starting Test spot.

Andy Farrell provided a cautious but optimistic update on Kinghorn: “I don’t think it’s as serious as it could have been. It was just an unfortunate rugby collision.” Kinghorn underwent a scan in Adelaide on Thursday.

Marcus Smith, who previously started at full-back in a loss to Argentina, continues in a bench role, while Fin Smith is selected to start at fly-half.

Tadhg Beirne will captain the Lions from the second row in Saturday’s fixture.

Although this is the final game before the Lions’ opening Test against Australia, the core Test squad is expected to more closely resemble the team that defeated the Brumbies, as that match likely served as a tactical rehearsal for the main event.
